Monaco is often associated with glamour and excess, yet this corner of the Cote d’Azur is emerging as a leader in sustainable, responsible tourism. It’s an unlikely spot for an organic fruit and vegetable garden, tucked away between soulless high-rise buildings that dot the most densely populated country in the world. But this 450 sq m sliver of land is where market gardener Jessica Sbaraglia toils away. It’s a lush slice of tranquillity in Monaco’s concrete jungle, lying in the shadow of the 170m-high Odéon Tower, the principality’s tallest building, which is also home to the most expensive penthouse in the world – €300 million (about £255 million), should you have the cash to splash. Sbaraglia, a 31-year-old Swiss native and former tennis pro and model, launched her urban agriculture business Terre de Monaco in 2016 and she now has five micro farms on Monaco’s rooftops, balconies and hidden plots of land. At this one, my taste buds are treated to a multitude of flavours from the garden, which grows everything from aubergines and courgettes to strawberries and apricots. “I want people to reconnect with the taste of natural, organic produce, and remind them of its diversity and ...

Recently a reader asked how many phone numbers Donald Trump knew. While I enjoy a dig

Recently a reader asked how many phone numbers Donald Trump knew. While I enjoy a dig on the president as much as the next person, how many phone numbers do ANY of us know? I know my wife’s number and that that’s it. I can give you my childhood number, my grandparents’ number, and my number in college, but all of those numbers are dead. Thanks to cell phones, I don’t think anybody knows any phone numbers anymore. How many numbers do you know off the top of your head? Does 588-2300 EMPIRE!!!!!! count? No? Okay, then the answer, I believe, is a paltry three. I know my number, the number to my parents’ house, and my wife’s cell phone number. That’s it. I don’t know my sister’s number by heart, nor my brother’s. I don’t even know my DAUGHTER’S number, which is a horseshit effort on my end. When my wife and I took our kids to Busch Gardens once, we wrote our numbers in marker on their hands in case they got lost. Since then, we’ve drilled them on memorizing those same numbers in the event of an emergency. Meanwhile, one of them gets a phone and I can’t be bothered to learn it. If I get lost at an amusement park, it’s ME who is supremely fucked. I would be orphaned, ...

Life through a lens: inside the Leica camera factory

Do you remember when technology tried to look like the future? The designs were often quickly dated. Yet the more advanced our household gadgets have become, the more we want to clad the most valued pieces in a timeless familiarity. DAB radios with mid-century knobs and handles sit in sub-quaker kitchens; smartphones in leather wallets slot into stitched bags; digital cameras are wrapped in a century-old chassis design, conceived around two long-vanished spools. Yet the business end of a camera is its lens, and there’s no obscuring the laws of optics with nostalgic cladding. However, the very best are surprisingly honest expressions of handmade craft. An hour’s drive north of Frankfurt is the Leica factory and museum in Wetzlar. It resembles a film reel, the corridor leading from the lobby to die Linsenfabrik being a great arc of black-framed windows like unfurled celluloid. Through glass doors lies an almost monastic workshop environment of silence and concentration. Leica originated in 1849, when a 23-year-old mechanic called Carl Kellner founded an optical institute in Wetzlar. The Leitz company’s first compact camera was produced in 1914 by Oskar Barnack, its Elmar lens by M...
