For new mothers-to-be, expecting your first baby can be a minefield - and that's just knowing what you need to buy.

Should you go for a swivel car seat? Do you really need a moses basket? How long will the cot last before you need to buy a toddler bed? And how big is too big when it comes to prams?

Here, FEMAIL compiles a list of all the essentials (as well as some luxury items) that all first-time mothers will need - from the moment you take your newborn out of the hospital, to feeding them their first solid meal.

Choosing the right pram for your baby and for you is important. Having 'test-driven' other buggies, the iCandy Peach is an immediate winner. Firstly, it looks smart (available in 10 colours – my favourites are the Peacock, pictured, and the Royal blue), secondly, it's incredibly practical and easy to manoeuvre. The chassis is also car seat compatible, carries a carrycot, turns into a pushchair, and can even convert for when an older sibling arrives or twins. The handle is sturdy, and can be changed according to the height of the person pushing the pram, the brakes are an easy-to-use switch which you can flick with your foot while keeping two hands on the buggy, and the basket underneath is one of the biggest on a pram. What's more, it's incredibly simple to fold down (and is free-standing when it is) using just one hand, has all-round suspension and has quick-release rear wheels. Plus it has celeb fans such as the Beckhams and Richard Branson.

The iCandy Peach carrycot is an optional extra, available in the same colour as the main pushchair. It's smartly designed and suitable from birth until your baby weighs up to about 20lbs - or until they can sit unaided – and is safe for overnight sleeping. In keeping with this British brand's style, the carrycot can be easily fixed on to the main chassis by sliding in to place, or pressing two buttons either side of it to release it. It's sturdy, cosy and comes complete with a padded mattress and a raincover - and it also folds flat when not in use.

This incredibly light-weight pushchair weighs around 13lbs and folds up (with just one hand) to a compact 52 x 44 x 18cm, which you can carry on your shoulder like a bag. As well as being stylish, the award-winning Yoyo+ is practical - perfect for holidays as it fits on board a plane as hand luggage. You can buy an extra carry cot for newborns (£146) and it comes as well as a stroller for six-month-olds - which clips on popular car seats. All the fabrics are machine washable.

Loved by the Royals and renowned for its quality, Silver Cross is one of the finest British brands when it comes to all-things baby. And the elegant Nostalgia Sleigh Cot Bed is top of the list. Not only does it look beautiful, with gently curved detailing, but it also converts from a cot into a day bed and a toddler bed. Yes, it might be a little pricier than other cots, but it will last until your little one is about four years old. It also boasts two large under-bed drawers for extra storage, and the mattress can be made higher for babies to save new mums' backs. It also has a stunning antique white finish on wood. What's more, Silver Cross will also send someone to build it for you in your home. Perfect.

This matching Silver Cross changing station is finished to the same high standard as the Sleigh Cot. With a changing station on top, the dresser also features three very deep drawers, perfect for keeping baby's clothes in. As it's multi-purpose, once there's no need to use it to change baby's nappies, the changing station is removable - leaving behind a dresser which will add a touch of elegance to any home.

Combining a dresser, wardrobe and changing unit all rolled into one, this Silver Cross unit is perfect for families with smaller nurseries. The clever changing station folds out when needed with a simple touch - and then disappears neatly when finished. The Soho range is finished with a white woodgrain, to create a more modern style.

This three-in-one bedside crib makes nighttime feeding easier and with its lift-off bassinet, it means you don’t need a Moses basket. The award-winning SnuzPod is the perfect way for mothers to sleep closer to their babies, as it attaches safely to the side of the bed - and has a drop-down side to make night-time feeding easier. It's a lovely design and also has a rockable stand, a storage shelf, comes with a mattress - and sleeps a newborn up to six months.

As your newborn will mostly be sleeping, this mattress 'cocoon' - designed for use in a cot during your newborn's first months - allows babies to rest in a semi-foetal position, with a slightly curved posture. It's also designed to help avoid startle gastric reflex and flat head syndrome. Can also be used for daytime naps, and comes with a tummy band to help maintain baby in the ideal position in the 'nest'. Be sure to get the cute Cocoonacover as well to keep your little one snug.

This adorable range features jungle characters and musical notes on a crisp white 100% cotton background. If you're splashing out on the Silver Cross nursery products, it makes sense to add these to your babyshower wishlist to complete the set. From the Luxury Changing Mattress (£24) and the Musical Cot Mobile (£32), to the super-cute Luxury Sleepsuit (which has the softest jersey lining) and the Luxury Coverlet (£32), your newborn will be snug as a bug in these hand-finished quality products.

The ultimate in keeping an eye on your child while they sleep, this device is a baby HD monitor with a 3.5-inch colour unit that live streams video from the camera in your baby’s room using wifi. It also boasts room temperature monitoring, infrared night vision, a lullaby player and two-way communication via a high-sensitivity microphone. It also allows you to log in from anywhere in the world on your smartphone or tablet via the secure Hubble App – perfect if you’re away for work and don’t want to miss baby’s giggles.

This ‘womb experience’ that mimics sounds that babies hear before they are born helps trigger a calming reflex, so reducing crying time and inducing quality sleep.

The heart of this soft Whisbear emulates the sound the baby hears in the mother's womb, which is supposed to soothe the baby more easily. It 'shushes' for 40 minutes, then fades out on standby mode - if the baby wakes and starts to cry, the ted springs into action again. Genius.

Because no one really wants their home smelling of poopy nappies, this disposal system offers an odour-free, eco-friendly option. Available in pretty colours, the 15l bin is easy to use - opening with a foot pedal - and holds scented, biodegradable bag liners which can be cut according to how much waste you have in the bin.

This unique baby blanket allows parents to easily and safely pick up their sleeping newborn while they are still wrapped up without putting a strain on the mother or father’s back. Perfect for C-section mums. Useful transferring baby from car seat to crib.

If you plan to get away with your baby, and don't fancy carrying around a cot, this is ideal. It's lightweight and packs away in a small bag - and can easily fit into a plane's overhead lockers. It's simple to assemble, comes with a fitted, self-inflating mattress, and cosy sheet, and has mesh sides - protecting your baby and creating a cocooned affect. The travel cot also doubles as a handy playpen - perfect for days in the park or even at home if you don't have any hands free for a few minutes.

This beautiful set features a cot bed duvet and cover along with a pillow, pillowcase and fitted sheet. It's made from 400tc sateen bed linen and aims to promote a perfect night's sleep.

Wrap up your baby and keep them warm in this Snuz swaddle blanket that keeps newborns comfy in a soft and cute design.

You'll only want the softest material next to your newborn's skin, and this 100% organic cotton fits the bill. It's ideal for naps or just to be wrapped in for cuddles on the sofa. It comes in five colours and has a honeycomb pattern. It's a luxury buy so perhaps one for nanny-to-be to gift their new grandchild.

Choosing a car seat can be difficult. The Joie Spin 360 came out on top for us firstly for safety and secondly for the rotating seat. Rather than leaning into a car to put your baby into a seat, the seat comes to you, spinning so that you get easy access to get them safely tucked in with a five-point harness (which tightens with one pull motion), and then spin them - and lock them - into a rear-facing position. It is suitable for newborns up to four years old, has five recline positions, is easy to use, has an ISOFIX installation and features a body and head support which can be removed as baby grows. It feels incredibly sturdy but very comfortable.

Want to keep an eye on your bub while you're driving? The Garmin BabyCam Wireless Backseat Camera is the world’s first in-vehicle video baby monitor that works with a compatible Garmin sat nav. The device - which fits easily to a headrest - allows you to switch from sat-nav mode, to baby view so you can see exactly what your rear-facing newborn is getting up to. Also has a nightmode.

This is a genius idea. Everything that new mums could need for their baby all in a unisex box, which very cleverly doubles up as your newborn's first crib - based on a tried and tested initiative in Finland which drastically cut the number of cot deaths. Inside are 50 essential, luxurious items - including 12 babygrows, 4 pairs of trousers, a grow bag, 3 muslin squares, bibs, hats, socks, a towel, nappies, wipes, bra pads, baby nail clippers - and a fitted baby mattress. All the brands are premium, boutique companies, and the products include a range of organic, 100% cotton and Fair Trade items. It really is a must-have for all new mums - and is amazing value for money.

This starter kit – with a fun storytime theme - is for mums who want to try reusable nappies. Made from super-soft and fast-drying material, along with bamboo for comfort, these promise an easy-to-use option. You’ll need to use a liner (either disposable or washable) to catch all the nasties.

The ethos of this ingenious high chair is that not only does it bring your baby to the table but it grows with them. When baby is around six months old and able to sit upright, upgrade to the baby set, which attaches to the main base. There's also a set for toddlers, six-eight-year-olds, a homework chair, right up to teenagers - offering value for money as well as comfort and safety. It adapts to fit any child at any age.

This genius four-in-one Beaba food processor steams, blends, defrosts and reheats - making it the ideal gadget for parents once they start weaning their babies. It's easy to prepare large quantities which can then be frozen in the practical Multiportions tubs. It's also super-easy to clean. The Babycook Book is also a must-have, boasting 80 simple but incredibly nutritious recipes.

Sometimes breastfeeding isn't possible, so the Perfect Prep Machine promises to help out while you have your hands full. This nifty device aims to shave time off the mundane tasks so you can spend more minutes with your newborn. It makes a fresh bottle at the right temperature in less than two minutes. It also has a filter system to remove impurities - and can make 4oz bottles to 11oz.

This single electric breast pump is small and light which means new mums can express milk whether at home or at work. It's designed to be as comfortable as possible, and operates gently meaning less damage and better results.

Breastfeed in comfort with this portable pillow that ties around your waist. Also doubles up as a bag.

Turn pretty much any chair into a high chair with this portable funky designed, versatile product that can be used on the go so your little one can join you at the table.

A breathable, blackout sun and sleep solution for prams, buggies, car seats and travel cots – a simpler, easier, lightweight and secure alternative to a draped coat or blankets. Perfect for an after-feed snooze.

Just because you're a new mum, doesn't mean to say everything you own needs to be baby-themed. This smart change bag for grown ups is beautifully designed (by ex-Mulberry designer, Janet Collin) - and was inspired by actress Emilia Fox - yet practical. It comes with a changing mat, a bottle bag and a dust bag, and has separate compartments to organise everything you'll need while out on the go. And there's also a long body strap so you can drape it over your shoulder or hang it over the pushchair.

For a fun, lightweight and bright changing bag, this stylish option from Pacapod ticks all the boxes. Incredibly practical, it has two interior 'pod' compartments, one flat pack changer (for neatly organising nappies and wipes) and one flat pack feeder (for bottles etc) - and it has a lightweight, easy-to-fold baby changing mat. Either clip it on to or drape it over your pushchair, wear it as a normal tote - and you can easily use this as a normal day bag once the pods have been removed. And it won't break the bank.

A more masculine-looking changing bag, this Babymule in the charcoal colour is a perfect option for new dads. On the outside, it's a smart backpack (22-litre capacity), but on the inside, it's incredibly functional. There's a changing pouch, a mat, a bottle insulator and a wet bag in a handy purse to keep it separate, as well as plenty of pockets and space it fits everything they could need when taking out baby for the day. There's also a strap so it can be carried over the shoulder, or attached to a pram.

A large padded portable mat is something all new mums should have at their disposal - great for trips to the park or round friends' houses to ensure your baby has somewhere safe to play. It's easily cleaned and can be folded down from its 4ft-4ft square to just 1ft x 1ft - so easy to carry around as well.

There's a reason this teething giraffe has been around since 1961 - babies love it! Not only does it work as a toy as well as a teether, but it encourages newborns to reach and grab as part of their development.

With clinking rings, a ladybug teether and knotted antennae for chewing, this bug features a soft velour body and wings with a peek-a-boo mirror, a squeaker and crinkles to keep baby entertained.

This fun, padded play mat promises to keep baby amused for... well minutes at least!  As well as detachable, brightly coloured toys with different textures, it also comes with a cushion which is perfect for tummy time.

This smartly designed baby seat gently rocks newborns to sleep. The fabric is incredibly soft, and there are no batteries or chords and, importantly, it doesn't make a sound. You can also lock it into place for feeding time or for playtime with the overhead toy bar. The Wind device (£70), sold separately, has six speed settings to allow the Leaf chair to sway continuously on its own. If only they made one for adults!

Because you may not always be able to devote 100% of your time to your newborn, this BabyBjorn Bouncer Balance Soft is the perfect place for them while you start on dinner/finish off some work (keeping them in eyesight obviously). It doesn’t require batteries and is designed to give proper support to baby’s head and neck.

This carrier is easy to use and is made from a unique breathable, soft mesh material – and is perfect for both mums and dads. It offers proper back and head support for baby – as well as for those carrying them. It’s suitable from 8lbs-33lbs and is also available in black. The three layers of soft mesh fabric helps to reduce body heat and moisture.

This super-stretchy wrap allows mums and dads to keep baby close – especially during the first nine months of a newborn's life when they crave comfort and security. It aims to make the transition from womb to wearer, with as little separation as possible.

Keep baby safe and wrapped up warm after a bath in this super-luxurious apron-style (which allows both hands to be on your newborn) towel.

Designed to fit in a baby bath, this floating pillow echoes the feeling newborns experienced in the womb, so aims to promote relaxation. The design fits all babies' bodies while keeping their heads out of the water.

Loved by the Duchess of Cambridge, Seraphine offers stylish maternity wear that you'd wear even if you weren't pregnant. This navy wool empire line coat flatters your figure while keeping your bump warm. The fabric is soft and the coat fairly lightweight, so it's perfect for autumn.

This super-comfortable tank top is a god send. Not only does it add extra support where it’s needed but you can apply stretch mark cream underneath for a deep-moisture treatment.

After baby is born, you might want some extra support. Made from fabrics derived from bamboo, it’s soft and promises to minimise stretch marks, help tighten the belly, and support core muscle structure.

Any new mum would love this gift, which features four organic products. The pillow spray is safe to use during pregnancy and contains lavender and ylang ylang to promote a good night's sleep. The nourish balm is great for stretch marks as well as sore and itchy skin - and is gentle enough to use on baby. The nourish oil moisturises and can be used in a bath or directly onto mum's skin. And the mildly fragranced baby oil can be used on little ones from three months.

Now is as good a time as any to treat yourself - and these Elemis products will do just the job. Japanese Camellia Body Oil helps to prevent stretch marks (pictured, £35), Instant Refreshing Gel cools swollen ankles (£32) and Skin Nourishing Milk Bath leaves skin super-soft (£43). Also, book in for a luxury Elemis facial at House Of Elemis in London for pure relaxation.

Stay in your clothes for longer with this ingenious hack that allows you to expand the waistband on your jeans. Perfect for the early days before the bump has appeared.

This super-comfortable bestselling bra is now available in a candy pink and cream stripe. Designed with ruching at the front it allows the fit and appearance to be adjusted from a crop-top style to a plunge neckline.

This is a set of four basic items that you'll wear again and again. Inside your canvas shopper you'll find a black maternity skirt, black leggings, a long-sleeved white maternity top, and a smart black wrap dress which is great dressed up or dressed down. All at a bargain price as well.

Blending natural cotton, lamb's wool and cashmere, this nursing shawl is the perfect way to look stylish while feeding on the go, with poppers on the should to keep it in place. Can be worn as a pashmina, a scarf or as a swaddling blanket.

Taking place between Oct 21-23, The Baby Show at London Olympia promises to have everything mums-to-be and new mums could possibly need all under one roof, featuring leading brands and expert advice - as well as family entertainment.

This massive 12-foot pillow will become your new best friend - although your partner will slowly feel as though he's being squeezed out of the bed, it makes sure your back and bump are supported while you get a good night's sleep.

Your baby will be as snug as a bug in this super-warm baby bunting bag. It's perfect for very cold winter days - or if you're heading off skiing - and replaces the need for a snowsuit. The shell is water proof and inside is micro-fleece. It is machine washable, fits onto pushchairs, and means that baby will need nothing more than a jump once they're inside. Also expands to fit a four-year-old, so will last for years.

These cosy and cute Blade & Rose leggings are made of the softest cotton mix and are available in fun, bright colours. Also make nappy changing a breeze.

A cosy way of keeping babies comfortable in car seats is this Diono Cuddle Soft. It fits any car seat or pushchair with a five-point harness and keeps little ones securely tucked up throughout your journey. Is suitable for newborns.

As any mother will tell you, you can never have too many muslins! The Twinkle four-pack (£44.95) and the Super Star Scout three-pack are my favourites from this brand. As well as being super-soft, they are a change bag must, perfect for mopping up spills, wiping baby's face, and protecting your clothing while burping baby. Another great baby shower gift idea.

Another one for the baby gift list. These blanket wraps – my favourites are the Dela Stripe and the Woods (£39) – are made from the softest cotton and can be used as lightweight blankets or as a swaddle wrap.

As well as using these two soft cotton blankets to swaddle newborns (one patterned, one plain), they also double as a changing mat cover, nursing and pushchair covers and car seat liners! Perfect for a baby shower gift.

If your baby is due in the winter months, keep your hands warm as you take them for a walk inside these cosy hand-warmers that attach to the handles.

Made from luxuriously soft bamboo and organic cotton, this cute set is a perfect gift for new mums.

It features a blanket, front-opening sleepsuit, a Kimono bodysuit and a hat as well to ensure newborns are wrapped up comfortably.

If you're expecting a winter baby, also pop a MORI sleeping bag (£55) on your wishlist. It keeps baby's temperature regulated and lasts until they're two years old.
